Sesson 10

Quote of the day: “IN action to learn, we learn to act…” – Juliana Saxton

Warm-ups:

-Beep, Beep game:  This was a fun game.  We were dived into groups of about 5 and one person to on guard.  5 people sit in their desks with one of their hands up in the air, facing the guard.  The object of the game is for the people with their hands in the air to place their hand on the desk by lowering it.  Right before their hands hit the desk they are each to start making an alarm sound “Beep, Beep, Beep” gradually increasing in speed as their hand gets closer to the desk.  This beeping will alert the guard, who will then focus their attention by using eye contact.  The guard is to use different statuses ie: High or low.  For instance Wide Eyes, raised eyebrows, partly closed eyes. When the guard looks directly into the eyes, the hand is to be placed back up in the air.

-Card Status:  With random unseen playing cards held onto foreheads by elastic bands, each group will mill and ascertain their relative status using their cues of status and order the deck with in the group.  This was actually pretty tough.  I think this activity might take a bit of working up to.  A solid understanding and use of high and low status is essential so games like Status Mill would be a great to play multiple times.

In today’s lesson the topic of Immigration was introduced.  I had never seen something like this before.  It really was fun.  Using the the picture book “The Arrival” by Shaun Tan we were given cut outs of a certain page.  These cut outs were mixed up and in groups were we to sequence the pictures in what we thought made senesce, keeping in touch with the feelings, emotions and happenings that happen during immigration.   Phil walked around and gave us clues.  After we had decided it was correct we matched it to the actual picture in the book.  Some were surprise others were not.

Prior to this activity we had members of our class share their immigrations stories and their experiences around it.  It was interesting to hear an outside in view of our Country.

In this lesson we also played the game Exclusion.  In groups of three two of us were to ignore the third.  The third person was to try as hard as possible to be noticed, to no avail.   This was fun.

Sara was lucky to win a copy of the book “The Arrival” by Shaun Tan.

Using a picture in the Shaun Tan book we were to act out the scene we were given.  This was interesting, trying to collaborate on perspectives.  This hand, no the other hand, wait no…… To extend this activity we were to add an addition 30 seconds.  This 30 seconds was to show what was going prior to the picture being taken.   I can’t wait to use this idea in practicum.  It has so many uses.  The topic of Immigration isn’t the only topic that this can be used for.
