Monica’s presentation: Soundscape workshop

Well I will start this post with a funny observation, well it’s not that funny.  While we were listening and partaking in the activities that Monica was presenting/sharing with us, I was pondering just exactly was so interesting to Phil as he was busy typing away on his computer.  It looked as though he deeply engaged with someone online.  However, the next afternoon we received a nice summary of Monica’s presentation completed by Phil.  It just didn’t seem like Phil to be doing something like playing online while he has an invited guest in the room.  Sure enough, he was busy making notes for us.  Thank very much Phil for that.  I probably missed the part where you told everyone in the class what you’d be doing.

When I first heard we  would be having a soundscape presentation I really wondered what it would entail.  I had included the idea of soundscape in my prep-lesson plan but hadn’t yet done them.  I had no idea as to the diversity the term encompasses.  Monica played some activities with us, that weren’t all entirely new to us however as you mention Phil, it is interesting to see how other teach/interpret/adapt the same activities.

The Dragons Den was a great activity.  I though for sure that the dragon would 100% of the time get the thief, however this proved to be more difficult than expected.  The constant drone of the fan in the room must have been just enough to hide the footstep.  I like the note you make Phil about the hearing disabled.  In our auditory and visual world we need to know of ways to incorporate an assortment of abilities and disabilities.  For the people that live in just the visual world (hearing impaired) we must tailor our lesson for their environment.

I used to have a computer game called Steven Spielberg’s Directors chair.  One of the levels in the game was the Foley Stage.  It was here we could add real sound clips to some of his movies.  The closer you could come to replicating the sound and the timing the better recognition you received.  This fits well with the activity we did with Monica called Detective sound.  Taking the time to find the correct sound can take a while, but what it also did was create teamwork, trial and error, and questions.  I like this activity a lot and will be adapting it into my practicum this April.

All in all, a great class.  Enjoyed the activities and the different take on some of the activities.
