Pablo Freire A social educator
Activity(Group): Think-Puzzle-Explore A social educator.

We used this activity to review our reading of chapter 25.  We broke off into groups of 5 for a total of 6 groups in the class.  In each group we were to discuss Pablo Freire (anything about hime) using the following questions and using our creativity create a visual representation that SHOW our responses.

1-What do you THINK you know about this topic?

2-What QUESTIONS or PUZZLES do you have about this topic?

3-How might you EXPLORE the puzzles we have around this topc?

-I really like this activity.  It would be a great introduction to a new unit of study.  As Kirk mentioned, often teachers will ask of their students to “think about” or to “go home and brainstorm” but rarely ask them to SHOW their findings, instead just asking them to use their findings as a guide.  So, with that being said we were to somehow represent our findings on a piece of poster paper that we would hang up in the classroom.  This activity didn’t take all that much time and was worthwhile.  I must say, I was able to retain the information much easier (to my surprise) then I would have coming directly from the text or teacher.  I shall keep this activity in my tobeTeacherToolkit.

We then presented to the entire class our poster.  Since there were a total of 6 groups in our class,

two groups were assigned to present the first question, two groups for the second question and two groups to present their idea so as to limit the response from students “the other groups already said everything we had”,  good idea.

Comment:  This was made by a student in one of Kirks 400 level courses in response to the second page of this chapter in which it indicates the Portugese coexisted with the Indians that were present at the time of their arrival.

So far I am loving this idea of group work to disuss readings.  The reading really start to make much more sence when I can see how other people have interpreted the text.  Often I find myself bending my thinking which I do believe is the purpose.  More times that not I think WOW, I wonder why I didn’t think of that.  Oh well, all I can do is accept what I did take from it and build from there.  It’s all a process.
